Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) Matt 30 September 2024

What is PPIE?

Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) is a collaborative approach that involves patients and the public in the development, delivery, and evaluation of health and social care services. It ensures that the needs, experiences, and perspectives of patients and the public are considered throughout the innovation process.

Improved patient outcomes

By involving patients in the development and delivery of healthcare services, you can ensure that they meet their needs and preferences, leading to better health outcomes.

Enhanced regulatory compliance

Demonstrating a commitment to PPIE can help you navigate regulatory requirements more smoothly, reducing the risk of delays or rejections to your regulatory submission.

Increased funding opportunities

Many funding bodies prioritise applications that demonstrate a commitment to PPIE in the design process, increasing your chances of securing funding for your projects.

Improved trust and acceptance

Involving patients and the public in the development of healthcare products and services can lead to wider adoption and better patient engagement.

Case Study

An innovative FemTech focussed HealthTech Startup was on a mission to revolutionise the diagnosis and support of hormonal imbalances. They had a brilliant idea for a digital HealthTech intervention, but they were facing a significant challenge in securing funding from both the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) and Innovate UK.

From our experience, we knew SBRI was particularly interested in projects that demonstrated a strong commitment to Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE).

The startup knew that PPIE was crucial, but they were unsure how to effectively integrate it into their development process. That’s when they turned to Hodgkinson McCambridge.

Phase 1: Developing the PPIE Strategy

Our team worked closely with the startup to:

  • Identify relevant patient groups and recruit participants for focus groups and interviews
  • Develop a comprehensive PPIE implementation plan outlining how PPIE would be integrated into the startup’s development process

This initial work was instrumental in helping the startup demonstrate their commitment to PPIE in their SBRI funding application. As a result, they secured £100k in funding to further develop their medical device.

Phase 2: Implementing the PPIE Strategy

Once the funding was secured, we worked with the startup to:

  • Facilitate PPIE workshops to engage patients in the design and development of the medical device
  • Analyse patient feedback to identify areas for improvement
  • Support the implementation of the PPIE plan throughout the development process

This phase ensured that the startup was able to effectively incorporate patient insights into their medical device and meet their PPIE objectives.

Results

The PPIE strategy developed by Hodgkinson McCambridge helped the startup to:

  • Improve the patient centred approach of their medical device
  • Enhance regulatory compliance
  • Increase their chances of securing funding
  • Build trust and credibility with patients and healthcare providers
